Holiday among British aristocrats
English heritage
meets Mediterranean beauty
A journey through the British residences in Ventimiglia and surrounding areas.
The mild climate all year round, the uncontaminated nature, and the slow pace of Liguria in the 19th century won over the Brits, who immersed themselves in the beauty and unique atmosphere of Ventimiglia, at the time a very popular holiday destination among British aristocrats in search of sun and Mediterranean landscapes.
Among these, artists and celebrities who have left their mark, in literature, but above all in the area, where the love for Ventimiglia became beauty to be left as a legacy to future generations.
This is the case of one of the town’s jewels, the Hanbury Botanical Gardens, inaugurated by Sir Thomas Hanbury and which still retain a strong English romanticism.
The natural garden of Villa Piacenza Boccanegra also benefited from the contribution of a renowned English landscape designer, Miss Ellen Wilmott, who has expanded the variety of botanical species present and carried out important structural modifications.
Ventimiglia, with its mild climate all year round, immaculate nature, and the slow pace typical of Liguria.
